Gpgeneral is a port of Lgeneral, clone of old DOS Panzer General. It runs propperly on firm 1.2.1 but i've not tested in 1.4 (maybe it doesn't work) The only problem is that as the game was made for 640x480 resolutions, letters shown in gp2x screen are too small. I've tried to change it but i didn't have enough time to solve it. Next version will be fixed. |

Doesn't work for me with fw 2.1.0. I can select the PG campaign and get the text on the yellow window but then I can't go any further. I should be able to left-click to continue past this screen. |

Unfortunately reducing the graphics by 50% to get this to fit into 32MB has rendered the game unplayable in my opinion.
I ported LGeneral as a test by not scaling the graphics except the world map to 320x240 and the yellow campaign description frame to 240 high and I noticed that the text in some frames automatically fits into the available space. The deployment frame can be reduced in height quite easily and many others can be reduced to fit into 320x240 ( (gui_create_frame( int w, int h ) can quite easily be modified to reduce w and h if they are bigger than 320 and 240 respectively). The only frame I've come across so far that can't be reduced is the unit info frame that appears when right-clicking a unit: right-click an artillery unit and you'll see what I mean.
The big problem is the memory requirements. Using unscaled graphics will require about 53MBs on the GP2X. The GUI first takes the memory use up to 16MB and then the remainder is used for the tiles. This means that at some point during the loading of the tiles the upper memory is going to have to be used instead.
One particular annoyance with the LGeneral code is that of creating the entire GUI at the start instead of when needed (see gui_load() ). That initial 16MB of memory includes 27 16bit transparent frames of various sizes all wasting space.
There's no doubt this game is worth porting properly, but it'll be a lot of work. I'm wondering whether it'd be easier to decompile the original DOS game :)

GPgeneral is an exciting clone of the old DOS game Panzer General that offers a refreshing gaming experience on the GP2X. With over 3,000 downloads, it's safely one of the most loved games by gamers. Although there seems to be a problem with the letters appearing too small on the GP2X screen, the author gold bridal ring sets has promised to fix this in the next version. Overall, GPgeneral is a thrilling game that's worth checking out. |
