excellent - works first time (and every time thereafter), great quality rips at unbelievably small filesizes.
Cheers! |
No worries. I aim to please :) |

Oh just a little more information for y'all.
This pack works specifically with the version of the XVID codec included. I would like to point out I've encoded and watched a lot of videos with this on the GP2X and haven't had a single glitch.
I had read that people were having trouble with XVIDs, but this specific codec and rip settings...... no problems at all. |
Had an e-mail asking if the rips look good on TV OUT, but I haven't got a TV OUT cable so I cannot test that.
If anyone wants to let us all know how they look on a TV, please post a comment.
Also I've noticed that since I started encoding my video files using this system, the battery life whilst playing videos has dramatically increased. I think that may have something to do with the fact that smaller files = less data = less power required. Either way I'm proud and suprised by the result I've managed to achive. Kudos to my mate Dan (you know who you are) for testing the rips with me. |
One word: incredible :)
A 5 minute video became 12mb after ripping and on Tv-out it looks impressiv too, like a 40mb video.
Thx :)

Wow this is pretty nice thanks,
I Just got one request..
I wanted to convert a anime episode,
The original data=
filesize: 301mb
screensize: 703x396
playtime: 00:28:29
when i encoded i get
filesize: 257mb
screensize: 352x198
playtime: 00:28:29
i kinda get this with all anime files..
i used the animated settings.
could you maybe create one just for anime.
since some even turn out bigger than the original :|.
if its not a to big of a problem :$. |
Sorry for the double post..
But it seems the bitrate is the problem.
it gives 15000kbps :/
doubt that much is needed.
i'm going to play around with this when i have some time to get good quality at low bitrate :$.
i'm only used to work with the nsv encoder but this souldnt be to much diffrent. |

@ ThuGie:
I am actually currently working on an Animé settings script as we speak. I am a huge fan on animé (Evangelion, Wolf's Rain, Gundam etc. etc.).
My problem is I always do my anime encodes in dual audio (jap audio, english audio) and english subtitles if I want to watch it in jap :)
That's a problem because the GP2X doesn't support dual audio (yet ;)) I will test encoding with an episode of Ah! Megami Sama (Ah my Goddess) which i have in single audio (jap).
I will then update the package. Cheers for the comment and advice :) |
@ ThuGie: That shouldn't be happening (the bitrate)! What is the original format of the file?
Suggestion is in Virtual Dub, go to VIDEO > COMPRESSION
You should then see the XVID codec is selected on the codec list. Click CONFIGURE and make sure the Target Quantitizer is at 5.50. This is the ideal quantitizer for animated videos. If it is higher then I'm not sure why! |
Correction - Target Quantitizer should actually be 8.00 for animated, it's 5.50 for live-action!
Increasing the quantitizer makes the bitrate (and thus file size) smaller but reduces video quality. Lowering the quantitizer does the reverse.
Everyone is of course welcome to play around with the settings and try to improve on them, then of course it'd be nice for them to post their findings here. |

Results:
I've just encoded an anime (Ah Megami Sama) using the Animation Settings Script and it's gone from 275MB to 29MB with the same great quality on the GP2X as Family Guy, American Dad, and The Simpsons. |
Uhm thats pretty strange.
i encoded the file >
[Doremi-OTOME].Mai-Otome.Zwei.01.[Xvid][2B00B501].avi
and it was set to 8.00
I played around a bit though using a encoder where i can select the bitrate.
just cant really get a nice filsize with some good quality.. |
Well thats strange i just tried a anime
[SHS-Ureshii]Ghost_Hunt_06[1825E2F5].avi
got a 24,4mb file
142kbps bitrate a bit low though.
the quality well i could read the subtitles.
although i like it a bit better
i think around 200kbps sould give it a bit better quality for anime.
it might work with family guy, simpsons etc. |
Well i reinstalled Xvid and it seems to be encoding fine now kinda strange :/.
Again Thanks for the release :). |
ThuGie: I guess it all depends on what kind of file size you want vs the quality. Naturally it is easy to increase the quality by lowering the Target Quantitizer, but then the file size suffers. The way I did the cartoon and live-action settings was the find the best possible file size, then tweak the quality to keep as close to that size as possible.
I encoded a movie at 1.2GB yesterday (Back To The Future) and got it down to 264MB. However the resolution could easily be halved again which would significantly reduce the file size with only the slightest change to the quality.
I may be updating the pack today or tomorrow with some extra settings script files. |
ThuGie: I think I may have figured out why you are having differing results with anime. Some anime has nice smooth graphics rather than crisp lines. I mean like.... say for example Ghost In The Shell which has CGI mixed with drawn charecters. For this I would use the Live-Action settings but the file size becomes rather large.
I need to make a Settings Script for CGI videos I think! |
That would be nice thanks :). |
do u think u could release a patch that would allow you to encode straight from a DVD? or a readme on how? |
to encode from a dvd, first you need to rip the dvd (dvddecrypter or dvdshrink) then convert the files into avi using virtualdubmod, then shrink the avi using the above tool. |
Thanks HappyTent for explaining that for me.... haven't checked the comments on this download for a while
I have plans to make a full GUI-based utility to do everything without having to use multiple programs... but it's taking a back seat at the moment to more pressing matters. |
So far it hasn't been able to encode any of my movies.... once I got an audio not convertible error, etc. |
^ Do the .avi's have to be of a particular format? Thanks! |
You need to make sure you have the XVID codec installed (installer with this pack) and also the MPEG-Layer 3 Encoder needs to be available on your machine (this SHOULD be on there by default, failing that search it in google and you'll no doubt find it).
Other than that it should work no problem |
Works well.
I use DVDx for ripping of DVD's then
process them through Virtual Dub.
Seems to provide best quality when
ripping to avi file as apposed to MPEG1
with DVDx, then run your rip through
Virtual Dub :o) |

It is a program that converts a variety of avi, mpeg, and mpg formats to *.AVI 320x240, which is compatible with the gp2x media player.
It can be used if you wish to watch an avi movie without any slideshows bubble shooter or power-hungry overclocking features. |

I was so impressed by your article - you really did your research and incredibox it shows. I learned so much from reading it! |
I'm glad to hear that everything is working well for you and that you're satisfied with the quality of the rips. exhibit of sorrows |
On Winamp, the video crashes after two and a half minutes. VLC plays it completely, but shows a total uno online running time of almost 50 minutes. It runs correctly on the GP2X. |
Make sure you have the latest version of Winamp shell shockers installed. Updating the software can sometimes resolve compatibility issues and improve performance. |
Not only was your post informative, but it was also thought-provoking and provided valuable slope insights on the topic at hand. Your thorough research and attention to detail were evident and added a great deal of credibility to your arguments. |
