DosBox 0.70.1 for GP2X by bOingball|
-----------------------------------+
25th March 2007 -
This is a port of Doxbox 0.70 to the gp2x.
Again this would could not have been done without 'Jim "bjimba" Russell's' original patch

14th Aug 2006 -
This port is based on the work from 'Jim "bjimba" Russell' who compiled an older Dosbox CVS to run on the GP2X.

I've basically put bjimba's patch into the latest stable 0.65 build.

I've done this as the orignal Dosbox did not work on my GP2X (all I was getting was a black screen)
when trying to load a game.

This version seems to work with some games but not all. (like the orignally included blockout game)

Main Features of 0.65 :

    * 4/15/16/32bpp VESA mode support

    * Lot's of fixes for better vga compatibility

    * Improved CGA composite output

    * Improved screen updating for more speed

    * PCjr machine mode added

    * Speedup cpu cores and fix endian issues

    * FPU core speedup with assembly

    * Improved keyboard and bios handling

    * Lockfree mouse mode added again

    * Improved builtin dos with umbs and better fat support

    * Added VCPI emulation and fixed some issues with ems

    * Improved support for booter games

About DOS Box
-------------
DOSBox emulates an Intel x86 PC, complete with sound, graphics, mouse, modem, etc.,
necessary for running many old DOS games that simply cannot be run on modern PCs and operating systems,
such as Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Linux and FreeBSD.

INSTALLING
----------
(Same installation as bjimba's version, you can just replace the dosbox file if you want to upgrade to this version)

Copy the dosbox subdirectory included in this archive to your SD card.
Set up a separate configuration for each game you want to play. That
would consist of a dosbox.conf file, a mapper.txt file, and a
gamename-here.gpe file.

The dosbox.conf holds your config settings for that game (have a look at the example one provided in the root)
The mapper.txt holds your keybindings - basically you can bind any press on the gp2x to a keyboard key.
The gamename-here.gpe holds the settings to boot up dosbox with that game settings

TRYING IT OUT
-------------
Supplied with my version of Dosbox is the 8088_cor demo,
This demo runs a nearly 100% speed on dosbox on the gp2x with full sound at 200Mhz
Too start it just got to the 8088 folder and runs it's icon.
Press anykey twice to get it to start up.

Then get a copy of some DOS Games and see how they run.

CRY FOR HELP
------------
Check out the gp2x wiki located at : http://wiki.gp2x.org/wiki/DosBox

Build on that with your gaming experiances with Dosbox 0.65 and share your mapper and config files

BUILDING YOUR OWN (Bjimba's words / not mine)
----------------------------------------------
DosBox is a GPL-licensed application, so this, being a derivative
work, is also GPL-licensed. A copy of the GNU General Public License
is contained in the file COPYING.

If you want to hack on this yourself, follow these steps.

1. Get a copy of the source. I recommend getting a copy of the daily
CVS snapshot of DosBox from http://cvscompile.aep-emu.de/dosbox.htm

2. Set up a cross-compile environment using the ooPo toolchain:

     http://www.oopo.net/consoledev/

3. Unpack the source in your $GP2XDEV directory -- if you did Step 2,
    you know where that is.

Now, I'll give you the sequence of steps that I used to build. The
patch file that's mentioned contains my changes, and should be included
in this archive:

cd $GP2XDEV/dosbox
./autogen.sh
cat (path to patch file)/dosbox-cvs20060125.patch | patch -p1
./configure --prefix=$GP2XDEV --build=`uname -m` --host=gp2x CPPFLAGS="-I$GP2XDEV/include" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -fmerge-all-constants -ffast-math -funswitch-loops" LDFLAGS="-static -L$GP2XDEV/lib" --with-sdl-prefix=$GP2XDEV
make

If all this worked, you should have a dosbox executable in the dosbox/src/
directory.

The flaw in this whole setup is that the CVS source changes every day, and
by the time you try this, the patch file may not work. Just go read the
patch file, then. I really didn't change much. You wanted to hack, didn't
you?

HOW I BUILT IT (bOingball)
--------------------------
I used a dreamlinux workstation : http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/

I installed Oopo's DevKit (2006/05/25) - http://archive.gp2x.de/cgi-bin/cfiles.cgi?0,0,0,0,14,1609

(I installed it in to the default home directory of my useraccount in dreamlinux)

Make the toolchain and libs

I patched up the source with Bjimba's changes from his orignal dosbox version .patch file (I done it by hand since the 0.65 source
is different from the source he used)

Then run Bjimba's instructions.

cd $GP2XDEV/dosbox
./autogen.sh
./configure --prefix=$GP2XDEV --build=`uname -m` --host=gp2x CPPFLAGS="-I$GP2XDEV/include" CXXFLAGS="-O3 -fmerge-all-constants -ffast-math -funswitch-loops" LDFLAGS="-static -L$GP2XDEV/lib" --with-sdl-prefix=$GP2XDEV
make

I ended up with the version I'm presenting to you now.
