sz81 is a Sinclair ZX80/ZX81 emulator very much based upon the work of Ian Collier's xz80 and Russell Marks's z81 but employing the highly portable SDL and including additional functionality and features for desktop computers and portable devices.
Features (not WIZ specific): - Virtual keyboard with several adjustable properties - Control bar with icons for regularly used features - Load anytime file dialog (no need to use LOAD) - Save state system with 9 slots for each program - Runtime options including a joystick configurator - RAM configurations of 1 to 4, 16, 32, 48 and 56K - Quicksilva, BI-PAK ZON X-81 and VSYNC-based sound - Screenshot saving using the bitmap image format - Joystick control remapping within the emulator - Full keyboard, mouse and joystick support throughout - 3x runtime switchable scaling on supported platforms - Window and fullscreen toggling on supported platforms - Portrait orientated resolutions such as 240x320 - The ability to run centred within any resolution - Source code support for *nix, AmigaOS4 and Win32 - Maximum porting potential since it only requires SDL
Changes: 2011-02-13 * 2.1.7 released * Added forced (non-LOAD) program loading via a load file dialog * Added a save state system for saving and loading sz81 save states * Moved command-line emulation options to GUI runtime options * Added support for 1 to 4, 16, 32, 48 and 56K RAM (UDG now works) * Added the ability to save screenshots via PrtScn (SDLK_PRINT) * Added support for o, 80, p and 81 program file types * Added autoloading of ZX80 program files in addition to the ZX81 * Added sequential filenaming for ZX80, printer and screenshot files * Added a ZX80 BASIC xxxx REM SAVE "progname" filenaming hack * Added an emulator pause feature via Pause (SDLK_PAUSE) * Added mouse wheel support, used within the load file dialog * Added a machine code PipePanic game and a machine code template * Added the GNU GPL'd Open80 and Open81 source code and ROMs * Added Win32 support via the _WIN32 preprocessor macro * Applied several graphical and usability tweaks * Fixed a couple of bugs
The ZX81 game in the screenshot is Kong by Paul Farrow.

If you're new to the ZX81, take a look here for some free game recommendations, and the ZX81 manual is available here

Apart from being extremely difficult to navigate even with a manual, it does the trick. I prefer something with a basic list of roms, where one button loads it up. But that's just me =P |

Hi darmakwolf
Thanks for your feedback because it helps me to improve the project.
Can you give me more information about the parts that are "extremely difficult to navigate" and I will take a look at them.
Have you not found the file selector available via LOAD ""? It shows a list of "roms" that can be loaded with one button. Admittedly it would be easier to not have to type LOAD "" but this is a feature that is part of [x]z81 which sz81 is built upon.
sz81 is an ongoing cross-platform project and I have to make decisions about which features to add or improve and the order in which to implement them. The last release saw the inclusion of runtime options and the joystick configurator which was greatly needed for the myriad of joysticks on desktop computers. Now I have a save state system and a start-up options page remaining todo and I will be improving already existing features such as making the file selector more easily accessible. I have to prioritise things you see.
Here's something that I do which you should try :-
* Show the virtual keyboard and move the green selector to "J", activate the control remapper (select) and press Vol-.
* Activate SHIFT either by selecting it or by pressing and holding LTrig, move the selector to "P", activate the control remapper and press Vol+. Deactivate SHIFT.
* Move the selector to "R", activate the control remapper and press RTrig.
Now at the ZX81's prompt you can press Vol- Vol+ Vol+ B to show the file selector, and if a "rom" doesn't autostart then you can press RTrig to type RUN.
All the controls used within the emulator are remappable. Hope this helps and please get back to me.
Regards,
Thunor

This project has just had a huge update and now includes a file dialog for forced loading at anytime; and a working ZX-style scrollbar!
Vol- and Vol+ can now be remapped to something else: how about save-state and load-state :)
